Advancing Human Health Through Science and Systems

Wandarra has worked in collaboration with CSIRO to contribute to the development of the North Queensland Protein Hub report, examining how plant-based proteins can support future human health, food security, and sustainable production systems.

The report explores regional opportunities to grow, process, and utilise protein-rich crops in Northern Australia, linking agricultural capability with nutrition, innovation, and evidence-based outcomes. This work positions North Queensland as a strategic region for next-generation protein systems that respond to changing dietary patterns and health considerations.

Through this collaboration, Wandarra supports research-led pathways that connect science, regional development, and human health — ensuring decisions are grounded in data, systems thinking, and long-term impact.

Human Health

Wandarra Health and Wellness is informed by independent scientific research, including CSIRO analysis into plant-based proteins, bio-products, and material pathways. This research focuses on how agricultural inputs, processing methods, and ingredient design influence human health outcomes, food systems, and broader wellbeing.

feature

Plant-Based Nutrition and Human Health

CSIRO research highlights a strong and growing demand for plant-based proteins in Australia, driven by flexitarians, meat reducers, vegetarians, and vegans. These dietary shifts reflect increasing awareness of nutrition, health, and sustainability considerations, positioning plant-derived proteins as a key component of future food systems.

feature

Protein Quality and Functional Ingredients

Plant protein sources such as chickpea, mungbean, faba bean, soybean, sunflower, and hemp are identified by CSIRO as important contributors to next-generation food and ingredient systems. Processing these crops into flours, concentrates, isolates, and hydrolysed proteins enables targeted functionality for human consumption, including improved digestibility and nutritional application.

feature

Processing Pathways and Health Considerations

CSIRO outlines multiple processing pathways — including dry extraction, wet extraction, fractionation, and texturisation — that influence ingredient performance and suitability for food, beverage, and nutrition-focused products. These pathways are critical in determining how plant-based ingredients interact with human diets and health outcomes.

feature

Whole-of-System Utilisation and By-Products

The CSIRO framework emphasises bio-circular approaches, where whole crops and by-products such as fibre, starch, oils, and hulls are utilised across food, feed, and biomaterial applications. This systems-based approach supports nutritional efficiency while reducing waste and improving resource use across the value chain.

feature

Health, Sustainability, and Food Security

CSIRO identifies plant-based protein systems as central to addressing future health, food security, and sustainability challenges. Northern Australia is highlighted as a strategic region for scalable production, supporting both domestic nutrition needs and export markets while contributing to long-term resilience of food systems.

Evidence-Led Innovation

Wandarra Health and Wellness applies scientific research to guide responsible development and decision-making, informed by CSIRO analysis and broader industry research. This approach is underpinned by:

Independent, science-based assessment of plant-derived ingredients and processing pathways

Focus on functional performance, nutritional relevance, and health-related outcomes rather than marketing claims

Whole-of-system thinking that considers raw materials, processing, by-products, and end-use impacts

Alignment with national research priorities supporting resilient food systems and human health

Commitment to ongoing review, validation, and collaboration as scientific understanding evolves
